Generator Transfer Switch: 4 Best Picks and Buying Guide

By ubaizn

Generator transfer switch

In this post, we will talk about the transfer switch for your generator. One of the most important items you want to consider before adding a backup source of power for your home is a transfer switch.

The time spent reading this article will be rewarded as you will have a better idea of what a transfer switch is and how to select the best for your needs.

A word of caution: there are several safety precautions to keep in mind while installing a transfer switch. Along with that, there will be guidelines and codes to follow, depending on where you live.

We will talk about transfer switches, the types that you can get, which type is best for your home, and how to install and use to transfer the power from your generator to your house when needed.

Once you have spent quality time with this article, you will be well-informed and will be able to make an educated decision on the use and application of transfer switches.  Also, you will be able to choose the best one for your needs and be able to install it following the instructions that come with the transfer switch.

What is a Transfer Switch?

Simply put, a transfer switch is an electrical switch that transfers electrical power between two sources.

Most portable generators have an automatic transfer switch (ATS) already installed between the house and the generator. It is found near the electrical panel of the home.

The transfer switch will make it possible for your portable generator to provide power to your home in case of a power outage. With the transfer switch installed, it eliminates the need for running several cables and extension cords to all the appliances you want to power with the generator.

The transfer switch makes your home safe and code-compliant to use with a portable generator.

Is there a need for a transfer switch?

In this section we will explore the basic question, do I really need a transfer switch?

If you look at it from a purely technical side, no, you don’t need a transfer switch. But, it is highly recommended that you have one installed for the safety of your home and for the convenience it provides.

For one, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC 700.5 and 701.5). The code requires the home to have the transfer switch properly installed.

Keep in mind that if you ever plan to sell your home, and you don’t have the transfer switch properly installed, the home will be in electrical code violation.

The practical need is that having the switch makes transferring the power from the grid to the portable generator effortless in case of emergency and power outages.

You know very well that all the major electrical appliances like your fridge, air conditioning, furnace, water heater, are hard-wired and cannot easily be connected to a portable generator using an extension cord.

Just imagine yourself looking for extension cords, untangling them, and trying to find where each will go in the dark.

Having the transfer switch will most importantly allow you to instantly transfer power over from the grid to the portable generator. It is a quick and easy, reliable, and safe way to switch power sources in times of need.

Not only is it recommended, but having a transfer switch is the safest way to connect a portable generator to your home. Extension cords can cause a back-feed and be an electrical hazard, which can increase the risk of fire and electrocution leading to serious injury or even death.

What To Look For in A Transfer Switch

When you are in the market for a transfer switch, you will be presented with several choices. This section will help you identify the optimum characteristics of a switch and guide you to make an educated selection.

Here it goes:

Type

There are two main kinds of transfer switches, automatic, and manual. Each comes with its own pros and cons. We will discuss them below.

Comprehensive Kits

The key factor is simplicity in the installation of the switch. A comprehensive kit will provide all the correct parts. You will have all the ingredients in one packet.

As a practice, most switches come as a kit. But is always a good idea to double-check while purchasing to be on the safe side.

Wattage Rating

Your generator comes with a number called running watts. Make sure that the switch you are buying meets the requirements, and is able to support the portable generator.

It is important to determine the appliances you want to power through the transfer switch and calculate the watts it will take to run them.

UL/CUL Certifications

Even though most brand name switch kits will be compliant to these certifications, it does not hurt to make sure that the switch you are getting meets the specifications.

Warranty

This is a no-brainer. You will always check to see how the company stands as far as the warranty goes and its customer support for their products.

Since you are handling a large electric load, having a warranty will give you peace of mind you want.

Types of Transfer Switches

In this section, we will do a comparison of manual vs automatic transfer switches

Transfer switches come in many shapes and sizes, e.g., open transition closed transition, and delayed transition switches. But these are more useful in office settings and various business environments.

For this article, let’s concentrate and focus on home use only.

Again, for home use, there are basically two types, manual and automatic transfer switches. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending upon your budget and application.

After reading this, you can select the one which is the best fit for your needs.

Manual Transfer Switch

As the name suggests, the manual transfer switch lets you manually switch the power source from the grid to your portable generator with the flip of a switch.

Although these types of switches are less expensive than their counterparts, the automatic ones, it will require you to access the switch during a power outage. Make sure to keep a flashlight handy!

The manual switch also will let you manage the amount of load on your portable generator, thus preventing overloads.

Manual Transfer Switch Pros

Less expensive – compared to their automatic counterparts, they cost much less.

Ease of setup – Installation is easier as there are lesser moving parts and no programming is needed.

Ease of load control – Since there are switches on each of the circuits, you have full control of your portable generator’s load. This is a good idea to prevent overloading.

Manual Transfer Switch Cons

The basic disadvantage is that in case of a power outage, you will have to manually switch from the grid to the generator to allow it to power your home.

Automatic Transfer Switch

As the name suggests, when you lose power to your home, the automatic transfer switch will transfer the power source from the grid to the generator without any input from your side.

You can program these switches to automatically power the high priority appliances and circuits during a power-out.

As the saying goes, with convenience comes a cost. The automatic transfer switch with all its feature, higher maximum watt ratings, and bells and whistles, will be priced higher than their manual counterparts.

Pros

The best advantage that the ATS has over the MTS is that it will automatically switch the power source. No manual switching is necessary.

Many ATS are programmable. This enables you to put a higher priority for necessary appliances, avoiding overloading

Cons

Compared to their manual counterparts, the ATS is definitely more expensive. But, you will also get more features out of it.

Inverter Generator Vs Conventional Generator: What is the difference?

By ubaizn

Technology is evolving very quickly, and you will see this advanced technology in daily use machines too. I bet you have heard about the inverter generator, but you may don’t know how they are different.

Well, for starters, Inverter generators aren’t around for much time. They are designed based on the concept of “Power Inverters,” which are widely used in power converting circuits in the grid as well as cars too.

So today, we are going to talk about what are inverter generators, why you should use them, and how they are different than standard generators.

Difference between inverter generator and conventional generator

inverter generator

Working of generator

The fuel is ignited in the chamber, and with the help of combustion gases, the rotor of the generator is rotated through the mechanical gears. As the rotor cuts the magnetic field produced by the stator, the electricity is produced, which is collected through the rotor.

Now you know how any generator works.

The conventional generator produces the direct AC current (we will understand this part later), whereas the inverter generator produces AC current just like the normal generator, but then it converts it to DC current then again converts it back to AC power.

Let us understand this phenomenon with the help of this equation.

This is not as hard as you think it is. Anyone with simple math skills can understand it.

So as you can above, that is the equation of speed of rotation of the generator, be it alternator or synchronous generator.

As you know, the frequency of the current in the USA and Canada is 60Hz, and it must remain 60Hz for the proper function of your electrical appliances.

And p is the number of poles used in a particular generator. All the household generators have two pole arrangement, so here p=2.

Now in order to get f=60 (given that p=2), the generator must run at a constant 3600 RPM speed no matter what.

The conventional generator produces AC current directly, so it has to run at a constant 3600 RPM speed, but that is not the case with inverter generator, here’s how.

The inverter generator can produce power at any frequency (hence, it can run at any speed it wants) and then it will convert that lower frequency power to DC power.

Note: inverter has the ability to convert the DC power to any desired AC power containing any frequency you want.

So now the internal inverter will convert this DC power to 60Hz 120AC power, and due to process, the inverter generator has no need to run at a constant 3600 RPM speed.

Check Out The Best Inverter Generators on the Market

Fuel efficiency

In the above portion, I explained how both the generators differ in terms of internal structure. Now let’s understand why the inverter generator is so fuel-efficient.

As I said earlier, the conventional generator must run at 3600 RPM no matter what amount of power you need, and this consumes a great deal of fuel.

Let’s understand this by the above example. Suppose you have a non-inverter generator that can provide 2000 watts of continuous power. Now let’s say you want to run a 100-watt device on it. And then you want to run a 1000-watt machine on it. In both cases, the generator must run at 3600 RPM to produce 60Hz AC current.

As you can guess in both cases, the same amount of fuel going to be consumed irrespective of its load demand. So unless you are running your generator on maximum capacity, you will lose a great deal of money on fuel.

Now let’s take an example of an inverter generator. Suppose you have an inverter generator that can supply 2000 watts of continuous power. And first, you want to run a 100-watt device on it and then you want to run 1000-watt device on it. In the first case, it will slow its speed only to produce 100-watt power output, and hence, it will consume less fuel. And in the second case, it will increase its rotating speed to produce the 1000 watts of power accordingly.

And I mentioned earlier; the inverter generator does not need to run at 3600 RPM speed so it can adjust its speed to produce the power according to its demand. In short, the inverter generator will save you a lot of money on fuel costs.

Noise output

After fuel efficiency, this is the main reason for people to buy an inverter generator. Even at 100% load, any particular inverter generator will produce a maximum of 62 decibels of noise, which is equal to the noise of an average conversation. So you can guess how quiet they actually are.

The generator produces noise mainly due to the combustion of fuel and mechanical gears. As the load demand increases, the generator will burn more fuel to meet the demand, and hence the noise production also increases.

In the case of a conventional generator, the generator is constantly running at 3600 RPM, which is minimum noise it will produce, plus it has no noise minimizing parts in it, which increases the noise even further.

But the inverter generator adjusts its speed according to its load demand, so it is relatively quiet. So at maximum load, it will produce the maximum noise, which is very unlikely.

Additionally, the inverter generator is fitted with sound dampening materials and special mufflers, which helps in reducing the noise even further.

So the inverter generators are way quieter than the conventional generator, and thus you can use them for outdoor activities like camping and fishing.

Quality of power

The power produced by conventional generator contains a modified sine wave and the reason being is that its speed fluctuates when load demand increases or decreases. Thus, its frequency also fluctuates, and as a result, the produced power contains a lot of dips and peaks.

Due to this, the THD (Third Harmonic Distortion) of the power also increases. This resultant power is dangerous for sensitive devices like laptops, smartphones and TV because they use the microprocessor.

Also, this kind of unclean power heats up the devices consists of inductive load, and almost all of your appliances are inductive type. If you use this electricity continuously, then the life of your electronic devices may get shortened.

Inverter generator, on the other hand, uses the power inverter to produce pure sine wave power, which contains less than 3% THD, so in short, this power is very clean and safe to use.

Check Out The Best Inverter Generators on the Market

Maximum power output

This is a rather disadvantage of an inverter generator. The conventional generator comes with a variety of wattage ratings starting from 1000 watts to above 12000 watts so you can simultaneously run as many appliances as you want without overloading the generator.

The highest power output inverter generator available on the market can only produce 5000 running watts. The inverter generator cannot produce high power because their rectifying and inverting circuit cannot handle high power. And another reason is that IGs are designed to be portable and lightweight, so that is why they do not come with bigger engines hence low power output.

But by joining two identical portable inverter generators together, you can get higher power output, which is very clean and not to mention the low noise operation.

Price

The inverter generator comes with so many great features, so there is no doubt that it isn’t cheap. It is also true that if you go for high-end features (such as dual-fuel capability, wireless start, additional safety features and so on) in an inverter generator, then it is going to be very expensive.

But it doesn’t have to be that way because there are some affordable alternatives available too. So, in the end, it comes down to what you need from an inverter generator, and after addressing that issue, you will be able to choose the perfect generator for you.

Conclusion

The inverter generator is superior to the conventional generator in every aspect except for some negligible cons. If you need a generator for regular usage and if you are going to run your generator at its maximum capacity, then I advise you to choose the conventional generator because its cost of electricity produced per kilowatt is more than a traditional generator.

On the other hand, if you need a quiet generator for occasional use with maximum fuel efficiency, then the inverter generator is the best choice.

Indoor Generator for Condos and Apartments (Top 3 for 2020)

By ubaizn

indoor generators

Are there indoor generator which I can use at home safely?

Do you live in a condo or apartment and wonder if there is a viable solution for backup power?

What will happen if the power goes out?

If you answered yes to any of the questions you are in the right place at the right time.

Continue reading and learn about the best indoor generators and where to buy them.

Let’s boldly ask the question: Which portable generators can I run indoors?

All the reviews that you have read are about outdoor generators. They talk about the safe distance you must have between the generator and your home. Generators make noise and give out toxic fumes. You need a shelter for them in harsh climates.

You live in a condo, you say, “I will have to find something that I can keep in my closet. Of course, safety is the first issue.”

In this article, we will describe in detail a few choices which we feel are the best indoor generators in the market today.

Before we begin the discussion, let us talk about a few important issues that need consideration.

  • Make sure that you are legally allowed to keep a portable generator in the apartment.
  • Calculate your power needs as the capacity of the generator you will buy will depend on it.
  • Set a realistic budget. This is perhaps one of the major considerations for many folks.
  • Determine how much power you want during an emergency power-out situation without compromising safety.

Why Do I Need An Indoor Generator?

As you are aware, a portable generator is the most effective source of power during times when there is an outage. Folks who own generators sleep better, especially during harsh weather conditions, knowing that they and their loved ones are safe with a power backup.

The alternative power source can be a lifesaver during emergencies. During a storm, your sump pump will run and make sure it drains out excess water. Your refrigerator and heating and cooling system will function even if the grid is down.

It is a common practice to have a generator installed outdoors. But we are looking much further and exploring the option of having an indoor generator.

Here are some thoughts:

  • What if your outdoor generator breaks down during a hurricane or storm?
  • The indoor generator comes in handy as an alternative source of power in case the outdoor generator runs out of fuel.
  • There are certain models of outdoor generators that are not safe to use under extreme weather conditions. It is always safe to have an additional indoor generator.

All the above points also apply if you are living in an apartment or condo. You will have the peace of mind of having a source of power in your closet.

Which Indoor Generator Should I Buy?

An indoor generator purchase and installation require some serious thinking. The first question you will ask is, what size of generator will be enough for my power usage?

The second question will be, will I be able to install it in my condo or apartment, following all the safety procedures?

You want to keep in mind that you would want to fully utilize the backup generator when required. This guide will help you answer the questions.

Determine Your Requirement

First questions first, where do you want to put the generator? Your home or office?

Next, what equipment do you want to run off the generator? You will make a list of all the necessary items that need to be powered during a power-out: light, refrigerator, sump pump, power tools, heating system, computer, some outlets to charge your mobile phone, etc.

These are some thoughts to get you going. The best way to make the list is to walk around the house/office with a notepad and pencil jotting down what you want to be powered in case of an emergency.

You might want to have the entire condo or office powered as you do from the grid.

Again, it is critical to make that decision before purchasing a power generator.

Calculate Your Wattage Requirements

Now that you have made the list of equipment you want running under all circumstances, go ahead and double-check the list. You don’t want to be left out in the dark! Ok, you say, I have all the items listed.

Next, determine the wattage required for each item, and estimate the total power needed.

What is My Budget For An Indoor Generator?

Once you have determined your requirements, it is time to decide your budget.

Indoor portable generators come at all sizes, shapes, and prices. The way you want to approach this question is first to see if what you need in terms of power is available within your determined budget.

If yes, well and good. If you have to go beyond your budget, you will have to take the call to reduce your requirements or increase your budget. You are the only one who will be able to decide this.

Think about it this way. Do I want to go beyond what I can afford for the convenience of powering everything I need during an emergency? Or, can I reduce my emergency requirements to the most essential items I cannot do without?

This is a tough question. It is like decided what to eat for dinner immediately on a full tummy immediately after lunch.

You want to make sure you benefit from your purchase.

WEN 56200i Generator Review – Super Silent Inverter

By ubaizn

WEN 56200i Generator

The 2000-Watt Portable Inverter WEN 56200i Generator is probably the most silent generator in the market today. Let’s have a more detailed look in this WEN 56200i review.

The portable, quiet generator produces clean energy – 1600 watts rated, 2000 wats surge. The output is free of any unwanted voltage fluctuations.

The most likeable feature of the WEN 56200i generator is that it does not produce lots of noise like other generators in its class.

Let’s talk about the salient features of this machine to determine its reliability.

The alternator is equipped with a 4-stroke 79.7 cc engine. It makes just 51 dB of sound while operating at 25% load capacity, and 55 dB at 75% load capacity. This kind of sound output keeps it really quiet.

In fact, the US Department of Health and Human Services compares it to a normal human conversation.

When you want a quiet outdoor experience the WEN 56200i generator is your perfect companion. Imagine yourself camping or hunting and free of any unnecessary generator disturbance!

A salient feature of the WEN 56200i generator is that it is EPA III and CARB compliant – use it without harming the environment. A true environment-friendly power.

A significant question that arises when you decide to buy a generator is – what equipment do you want to run on it? With the advent of technology, the electronic pieces of equipment are delicate and any major voltage fluctuation can fry them.

Not with the WEN 56200i generator. It replicates a pure sine wave, limiting the harmonic distortion to less than 0.3% when there is no load and less than 1.2% at full load. You can run your delicates like computers, laptops, tablets, and phones with the peace of mind that they will be safe.

WEN 56200i Generator Features and Specs

Features:

  • There is a built-in USB port and other outlets to connect directly to your devices.
  • It is lightweight, no, really lightweight, only around 48 pounds.
  • Totally portable. Any able-bodied person can move it themselves.
  • A cool feature is the eco mode. It means that the motor in the alternator will automatically adjust its fuel consumption as you add and remove electronic equipment and appliances. The handy feature controls fuel consumption, a plus point in reducing cost(learn how much gas a generator uses here)
  • The clever eco-feature helps maximize the fuel economy. Check this out; the 1-gallon tank runs 4 hours at full capacity and a whopping 6 hours at 50% load!
  • Need more power? You can easily connect two WEN 56200i generators by simply using the WEN parallel connection kit. In this manner, you can share the wattage between the two (or more) units.
  • The WEN 56200i comes with a standard low-oil indicator. The machine will automatically shut down when the fuel is low. Saving your day!
  • Another great feature is overload protection. This dextrous addition will not only safeguard your investment but protect all the connected electronics from damage.

I will let you in on a little known secret. With just a little bit of research, I found out that any brand of inverter generator that is parallel capable can be attached in parallel with any other brand.

Warranty

The WEN 56200i generator is backed by a 2-year warranty. If you encounter any problems, contact the consumer helpline or their extended service network.

WEN 56200i 2000-Watt Gas Powered Portable Inverter Generator, CARB Compliant
  • Warranty: 2-years
  • Weight: 48 pounds
  • Noice Level: At ¼ load – 51 dB

Honda EU2200i Generator

Honda EU2200IC 2200-Watt Companion Super Quiet Portable Inverter Generator
  • Warranty: 3-years
  • Weight: 45.6 pounds
  • Noise Level: At ¼ load – 53 dB

Let me tell you something about Honda. The company is famous for manufacturing many of the best engines in the world.

Fun Fact: Honda has been manufacturing generators for as long as they have been making cars.

It is a remarkable high-quality generator. The workhorse of alternators. It is a Honda after all!

The Honda EU2200i comes with a huge 98.5 cc engine. The output of this alternator will easily handle loads of over 1000 watts.

This generator will comfortably handle 1600 watts of continuous load and 2000 watts of surge load, giving you the peace of mind that a heavier start-up load will not harm it or your equipment.

Runtime: the Honda EU2200i can operate up to 8.1 hours at 25% load capacity. At full load, you can expect it to run up to 3.4 hours on 1 gallon (45 lbs) of fuel.

Another cool feature is the Eco-Throttle. This handy tool will regulate the engine speed depending on the load, maximizing the fuel efficiency of the inverter.

Keep in mind that you may need to use a 120v charger as the 12v DC output of this alternator is not regulated.

Pairing the Honda EU2200i is easy. All you need is the separate adapter. Pairing it with another generator will obviously increase the output, giving you more power when needed.

The Honda EU2200i is a silent worker producing around 53 dB of sound when operating in economy mode and around 59 dB at full output. Yes, it is a bit noisier than the WEN 56200i generator.

The user-friendly, lightweight Honda EU 2200i, weighing only 45 lbs has is ergonomically designed and comes with a handy-dandy handle making it easy to carry around.

The fact of the matter is that the Honda EU2200i is probably the lightest portable generator around at this time.

Everyone who has driven a car knows that Honda has a sturdy build and solid reputation of all its parts, especially the engine. This is in addition to the 3-year warranty that comes standard.

To keep your mind at peace, you will have access to an extensive network of service centers when you need them. That is, in case you need to repair the Honda EU2200i or find spare parts. Good to know especially when you are on the road in your RV, and/or camping outdoors – even in remote parts of our beautiful country.

Yes, the Honda EU2200i is an expensive piece of equipment. But it is one of the top-sellers as far as generators go. For the price of one Honda EU2200i, you can get a couple of WEN 56200i generator.

Performance

From the performance perspective, the WEN 56200i generator and the Honda EU 2200i generator are similar. 1600 watt of continuous output and 2000 watt surge output.

Both the generators can be attached in parallel to another for increased power output.

The WEN 56200i generator is more flexible than it’s counterpart the Honda EU2200i; it has a number of power output options – two 12v DC ports, 12v AC ports and a 5v USB port. Also, the power produced by the WEN 56200i is clean – no surges – keeping your delicate electronics, cell phones, computer, laptops, etc., safe.

The Honda EU 2200i has a longer runtime, compared to the 6 hours at 25% load capacity of the WEN 56200i generator. The WEN 56200i generator has a smaller engine, making it more fuel efficient.

The WEN 56200i come with a standard eco mode. Keep in mind that it will not handle any load above 1000 watts in eco, and will revert to standard mode if the load exceeds 1000 watts.

Comparing the noise output; the WEN 56200i gives out 51 dB of sound, while the Honda EU 2200i produces 55 dB at 25% load capacity. Depends on the distance of the generator from where you are and your neighbor’s tolerance, this is something to keep in mind.

Even though the WEN 56200i is ergonomically designed, it weighs a couple of pounds (48 Ibs) more than the Honda EU2200i (45.6 lbs).

Honda comes with a standard 3-year warranty as compared to the 2-year one for the WEN.

With the WEN you may have to haul it to the nearest service center when needed. As for Honda, well you know, there is a huge network of service centers all over the country.

Price

The WEN 56200i is much much cheaper than the Honda EU 2200i. Keep in mind that the WEN 56200i is an exceptionally reliable generator with all the bells and whistles. It can safely rival the more pricey models in the same class.

Some reviews say that it is difficult to remove the side panels for regular maintenance, and the plastic panels appear to be delicate.

4) Gilette GEN-PRO GPED-65EK Diesel Generator

diesel generator

Interestingly enough, the Gilette GEN-PRO is the biggest but lightest generator that made our top list today. It’s 48 inches cubed, but weighs just around 200 pounds.

The generator runs a 9 horsepower engine and the fuel tank, capacity of 4 gallons, will give you about 10 hours of running time at half load. There is a fuel gauge that will tell you when the diesel is running low.

  • Peak watts: 6,500
  • Running watts: 5,000

The Gilette GEN-PROs frame is well built, and there are handles for easily picking it up. Wheels are not included out of the box but you can purchase a kit separately.

Outlets:

  • 4 x 120V 15A
  • 1 x 120V 30A twist-lock
  • 1 x 120V/240V 50A

On the dashboard, you’ll find a voltmeter, circuit breakers, and an hour meter. You’ll also be able to see low oil warnings, air filter warnings, and service engine alerts. There’s also a meter that will tell you how long the generator has been running.

To start the generator, you can use the old fashioned recoil pull or you can also start it electrically. You can’t start it using a remote.

Diesel, though it is a more polluting fuel, is far more efficient than gas and you can run the machine longer on a single tank as well as go for longer periods of time between maintenance.

In order to provide the cleanest(free of fluctuations, not emissions) power, the generator uses something called “Power Assist” which utilizes a capacitor and a winding design to make sure that voltage fluctuations are minimal.

Because of this system this generator is safe to use for a lot of smaller and sensitive electronics.

Pros

  • Power Assist
  • Good running time
  • Durable
  • Warranties are good
  • CARB compliant

Cons

  • No wheel kit
  • No remote

Best Portable Diesel Generators: A Buyer’s Guide

Now that we’ve gotten our favorite generators down, let’s talk a little bit about how diesel generators work and how they stack up against other generators.

Since no one generator will be a good fit for everyone’s needs and uses, here are some things you want to think about before making a buying decision.

Diesel Vs Gas or Propane Generators

Like I mentioned in one of the reviews above, diesel is a much more efficient fuel than petroleum or propane, but the downside is that diesel exhaust fumes are much dirtier than propane or gasoline.

In fact, on a scale of cleaner emissions, it would be this way:

  1. Propane
  2. Gasoline
  3. Diesel

The reason diesel is more efficient is due to how diesel engines burn fuel as opposed to other engines.

In an engine, compressed air is combined with a spray of fuel which is then ignited. The compressed air burns and expands, pushing the piston up and moving the axle of the engine.

In a gas engine, the air is compressed after it is mixed with fuel. In a diesel engine, the air is compressed first before getting mixed with fuel.

The earlier compression means it is more efficient, so it will run for longer and use up less.

On a strictly financial analysis, diesel generators will be more cost effective than gasoline, and far, far more cost effective than propane.

In fact, propane generators will use up about three times as much fuel as a diesel generator!

Gas generators also run hotter than diesel generators, so they will need repairs and maintenance a lot more often. Diesel generators require much less maintenance since there are no carburetors or spark plugs in diesel engines

Diesel is also the least flammable of gas, propane, and diesel, which may be beneficial during disasters like fires.

Finally, diesel generators are noisier than other generators.

Best Portable Diesel Generator for Home?

To make a choice for the best portable diesel generator for your home, you need to think about why you’re going to be using it. If you live in an area prone to frequent and lengthy losses of power, you will want to get a generator that has the most runtime so you don’t need to keep refilling it.

The Generac 6864 diesel generator is a good example, as it has a really long runtime for more than 24 hours on half load.

Otherwise, the DuroStar is a good value choice since it offers a lot of power and has plenty of outlets.

Which is the smallest diesel generator?

Most of the generators we’ve listed and seen are pretty much the same size. There is no significant difference in the sizes of the generators.

However, they’re still quite big, but not exactly huge, either.

To get a sense of the size, the smallest generator we’ve reviewed here is the Generac, which has dimensions of 38 x 22 x 25 inches.

It still weighs 250 pounds, though, so it is certainly not very light.

The Gilette generator on the other hand is bulkier but much lighter at only 200 pounds.

So when you’re talking about size, you need to keep weight in mind, too. For storage, the Generac is a good idea.

For easy transport, on the other hand, the Gilette would be your machine of choice.

Weight is also affected by frame design: is it an open frame, enclosed, does it have handles, does it have wheels?

If you’re going to use the generator for your home then you can get the heavier one. But for an RV or camping or what have you, you really want to get the lightest one possible.

Or you can just buy a wheel kit and wheel the generator around with ease.

Which oil should I use?

As a rule of thumb, you always want to use the oil recommended by the manufacturer in the owner’s manual of your generator.

We’d like to take this moment to point out that it is absolutely critical that you skim through the manual at the very least and read it cover to cover if you have the time and inclination/

Another factor affecting diesel generators and oil is the current temperature of the air. For high temperatures, you need more viscous oil like the SAE40. For lower temperatures, consider an oil with low viscosity like the 5W-20.

No matter which oil you use you need to consult your manual and perform the proper maintenance procedure to ensure your generator works for as long as possible and as efficiently as possible. Remember, this is an engine with moving parts, so they need to be well lubricated in order to run properly.

After a certain amount of usage, you’ll need to change the oil, much like you would change the oil in your car. Most generators do have control panel indicators that remind you to do so. If you forget to change the oil your generator’s life will greatly be reduced and you may even end up killing your warranty.

Conclusion

All in all, diesel generators are a boon to have around especially at home for those unknown and unwanted power loss situations.

Please share your experiences of using fuel-efficient diesel-powered generators in the comments sections.
